What Is The ACE Questionnaire?

The Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) study is a research study that examines the impact of childhood trauma on long-term health outcomes. The study measures 10 different types of childhood trauma, including abuse, neglect, and household dysfunction, and assigns a score based on the number of experiences a person has had.

Individuals who have a history of childhood trauma are twice as likely to develop heart disease, and have a much higher occurrence of anxiety and depression.

What are adverse childhood experiences? Experiences such as being exposed to domestic violence, experiencing sexual molestation, and not feeling loved or important are just a few examples.

Take the quiz below to find out if you’re at risk.  A score of 3 or higher indicates therapy may be needed.

The study measures 10 different types of childhood trauma, including abuse, neglect, and household dysfunction, and assigns a score based on the number of experiences a person has had.

People with a score of 3 or higher on the ACE are considered to be at greater risk for a range of negative health outcomes, including:

Mental health issues: People with high ACE scores are at increased risk of developing mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and substance abuse disorders.

Chronic health conditions: People with high ACE scores are more likely to develop chronic health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and autoimmune disorders.

Physical health issues: People with high ACE scores are at increased risk for a range of physical health issues, including obesity, chronic pain, and gastrointestinal problems.

Risky behaviors: People with high ACE scores are more likely to engage in risky behaviors such as smoking, substance abuse, and risky sexual behavior.

Impaired social and cognitive development: People with high ACE scores are at increased risk for impaired social and cognitive development, which can impact their ability to form healthy relationships, achieve academic success, and succeed in the workplace.

It’s important to note that having a high ACE score does not necessarily mean that a person will experience these negative outcomes, but it does indicate an increased risk.
